“Everything flourishes; each returns to its root
Returning to the root is called tranquility
Tranquility is called returning to one’s nature
Returning to one’s nature is called constancy
Knowing constancy is called clarity.”
Tao Te Ching, 16:2, translated by www.Taoism.net

This is the first post of a series of breathing exercises that I use in my classes or that I have found while researching effective exercises for maximum oxygenation.   The higher the oxygen level in our bodies the better our energy, the more efficient we are in fighting off infections, and the more able we are to deal with the stress in our lives.

I hope you find these exercises helpful and healthful. I welcome any comments and would love to know which, if any, of these exercises have proven most effective for you.  Please feel free to contact me or leave a comment in the form at the bottom of this page.

Lower abdomen breathing:

  1. We’ll begin with the most basic and simplest breathing exercise that has been featured in a previous post i.e., breathing with the lower abdomen.
  2. Begin sitting as usual with your feet flat on the floor, shoulder-width apart.  Tuck your hips under you slightly so that your back is fully supported by the back of your chair.
  3. Hold your hands on your lower abdomen to ensure that you are breathing from the correct area.
  4. Breathe in slowly and thoughtfully through your nose, expanding your lower abdomen as you do so.
  5. Exhale through your mouth (again slowly) as you tighten the muscles of your lower abdomen.
  6. Continue to repeat breathing in and out concentrating on the movement of your breath and the in-and-out movement of your lower abdomen for at least 6 breaths.

Acupressure point:

  • Find the Elegant Mansion (K27) point on the illustration above.  To enlarge your view click on the picture.
  • Press firmly on the point on each side of your chest for at least a full minute.
  • You may use this point frequently during the day if you are experiencing breathing difficulties.

Benefits: This useful point will relieve chest congestion, asthma, coughing and anxiety.

Don’t forget to drink water at the end of your exercise session or any time you begin to feel thirsty.  A Word of Caution…If you have or have had problems with your kidneys, please consult your physician.
